Inspiring a Love of Science and Nature

About Us

Environmental Volunteers promotes the understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science education. We train volunteers to teach natural science in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties through:

  • Each year, our volunteers teach 10,000 children through over 500 classroom programs and 125 field trips. Classroom programs are offered to grades K-6 and meet State of California science education requirements.

  • The EV’s headquarters is the EcoCenter, a public nature center and education resource in the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. We provide public programs to visitors and community groups.

  • Science By Nature is a collaboration program and website administered by the EV, allowing educators to search and sign up for local nature education programs from a list of collaborating organizations.

School Programs by the Numbers:

  • 10,000 children learn from and have fun participating in our programs each year

  • 60 schools in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties receive annual services

  • 350 teachers benefit from classroom programs throughout the school year

  • 100 trained volunteers provide lively, hands-on learning opportunities for students

  • 9 natural sciences subject areas come alive in hands-on lessons on topics such as Baylands Ecology, Earthquake Geology, Energy and Natural Resources, Nature in Your Neighborhood, and more

  • 45 years of serving Bay Area children since our founding in 1972
