EcoCenter Project Overview and Updates

The renovation of the historic Sea Scout Building as Environmental Volunteers’ new EcoCenter was undertaken as a major multi-year project, rolled out in phases. It began with five years of planning, involving permits from 15 local agencies required before the start of construction.

Phase One of the project, which focused on the building’s exterior and foundation, got underway with the temporary relocation of the Sea Scout Building while its new foundation was built – it was quite a sight watching a 67-ton building being lifted and moved 50 yards!

Phase One was successfully completed in November 2009. The new foundation includes pylons sunk 50 feet underground and is open on the marsh-side so that tidal waters can flow in and out under the building. The complete restoration of all exterior elements includes a new roof, new doors, paint and restored windows. .

We are proud to say that:

  • For the first time in decades, this historic building no longer floods with each high tide, thanks to the new elevated foundation.
  • All lead paint has been safely removed from the site. The lead paint that was originally used on the building no longer harms the sensitive baylands ecosystem!
  • Through it all, we brought thousands of children to the Baylands for field study excursions as we continued sharing the wonders of the nature.

Electronic Hardhat Tour of the EcoCenter

The EcoCenter site is a symphony of beautiful noise: the earth-mover is digging, electric saws are buzzing, hammers are clanging. The transformation will be quick and dramatic with completion scheduled by New Years.

With Phase Two construction underway, here is a brief ‘electronic hardhat tour.'

Phase Two Construction Underway

Here is what’s happening at the site:

  • The trails around the building: the area around the EcoCenter has been graded and the trails have definition; soon the oyster shell paths will be in place.
  • The electricians have 'roughed' in the wiring; same for the plumbing, phones and data lines.
  • Soon the drywall and the mechanical systems will be installed.

Treat yourself to a baylands excursion and see for yourself the dramatic transformation.

A Model for Sustainable Building

The new EcoCenter combines historic restoration with sustainable green building practices. The building is a model project, inviting the public in to learn about eco-friendly building methods and materials.

The EcoCenter will showcase the use of low-profile photovoltaic panels, natural ventilation during most of the year, and an interior finishing palette that will use both recycled and non-toxic materials. Energy efficient heating and plumbing fixtures, will provide efficient cooling and heating.
