Teachers can still sign up for 2010-2011 School Programs!

Teachers have a great opportunity to sign up for programs from Environmental Volunteers as well as programs from our collaboration partners using an innovative Website called Science by Nature.

Sciencebynature.org is where teachers can browse for programs from environmental science education providers such as the EV (see list below) to find programs that supplement their curricula; help them meet science and other school standards; and, get their students interested in science and nature.

Even though the EV has a waiting list of teachers who want EV programs, we and our partners have reserved many spaces in our programs exclusively for Science by Nature in order to reinforce the idea that two or more environmental science programs are better than one.

Please check out Science by Nature or give us a call at 650 961-0545 or 408 244-2449.

Nickels for Nonprofits!

Beginning on September 27th through January 16, 2011, Whole Foods Market Palo Alto will donate a nickel to the EV every time you use your own shopping bag. Simply bring your re-usable shopping bag to Whole Foods Market in Palo Alto for groceries and you will receive a 5 cent credit per bag, and given the option to donate that credit to one of three local non-profit organizations.

Please tell the cashier the EV is your choice to insure that our programs will continue to inspire school age children throughout our community.

Fun Nature Facts

Some interesting tidbits about the beautiful hummingbird:

  1. Did you know there are seventeen species of hummingbirds in North America?
  2. Hummingbirds flap their wings 50 to 200 times per second. Generally the faster time is in courtship.
  3. They can fly up, down, right, left, backwards, upside down and even loop-de-loops! Amazing!
  4. They have tiny little feet that are only good for perching, scratching or preening. This means if they wish to move, even a few inches, they must fly.
