Know Any Fun Facts

by John Armstrong, Outreach and Communications Coordinator

We're starting a "did you know" series of tweets on Twitter. If you don't know what tweets are (and, I just barely do), that's ok. You can help us anyway.

I'm looking for some fun facts - see examples below. Do you have any trivia that you use to amaze kids? What are some interesting nature facts that you use to wow and impress your friends?

I would love it if you could put some of your fun facts in just 140 characters, which is the max for a Twitter entry (a "tweet"); but, don't worry if you can't - I'll do the editing.

A few examples:

Bob Dodge told me that a big redwood drops over 10 million seeds a year.

Tony Kramer told me that the San Andreas fault runs 800 miles from S Calif to Tomales Bay.

Did you know: though many species of birds lay eggs over several days, all birds in nest hatch at same time due to synchronized hatching?

In the canine Olympics, coyotes would win the gold, cruising at up to 40 mph. Coyotes would win the long jump, too, leaping as far as 14 ft.

I'm looking for 50 of these things that I can pull out of the file, one for each week... so send me a bunch. Send them to john@evols.org.

Reminder of "Forward email" Campaign

by John Armstrong, Outreach and Communications Coordinator

Just a quick reminder of our "Forward email" Campaign for the fall training of new volunteers. If you didn't get the email, please let me know by emailing me at john@evols.org.

We hope you will forward the email to some good candidates in order to help us recruit more volunteers so that we can continue providing innovative environmental science education to our local children.

And, as an appreciation for forwarding the email, we are offering some greet prizes, including the Grand Prize of a stay for two at the Jug Handle Creek Farm & Nature Center.

Remember to use the "Forward email" link at the bottom of the email I sent you. If you want to use more than the 150 character limit in your personal note to your friend, just forward the email using your email program; but, make sure to let me know so I can manually enter you into the drawing.

Thanks!

Weed Pull

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped pull weeds out at the Palo Alto Baylands last week.

The dreaded stinkweed has been uprooted all over Byxbee Park, and the rangers think we have a good chance of staying ahead of this one.
