The Environmental Volunteers offer a Weekend Service Program at the Palo Alto Baylands.
Here, the classroom and field components of our Bay Ecology Service will be combined into a 2 .5 - 3 hour Saturday or Sunday morning service at the Baylands.
The in-class portion will be taught at the Interpretive Center and will be followed by a fieldtrip/hike around the Baylands.
These services are designed for any non-school group that may desire a service outside of school hours.
How does the salinity shape the lives of salt marsh plants and animals? How many creatures live in the Bay mud? Who are Mr. Salty and Mrs. Clapper? What does the scent of the bay tell us about the health of that environment?
Bay environments contain a delicate ecosystem that houses an abundance of life. Knowing about the health and interrelationships of this environment teaches us why the San Francisco Bay is one of the largest and most significant estuaries in the world!
Our Kids in Nature Weekend Service encourages groups to be nature detectives for a day and study the animals and plants of the diverse Baylands ecosystem, its history and its importance to our region.
The service begins at the Baylands Interpretive Center. The day opens with hands-on learning stations and ends with an ecology fieldtrip around the Baylands Nature Preserve. The in-house learning experience is an hour and the fieldtrip is 1.5 hrs.
This is a wonderful opportunity for various types of community groups! The minimum group size is 8 and the maximum is 24 people. A double service can be run for up to 100 participants. Our primary focus is K-8, however we also service adult groups or mixed age ranges.
